Lauren Jones, pictured by the Justracing camera at a recent Marburg meeting, has just driven her first winner in the senior ranks.
LAUREN JONES DRIVES HER FIRST WINNER IN SENIOR RANKS AT PARKANDS
Another young driver to hit the jackpot this week was Lockyer Waters lass, Lauren Jones. LJ broke into the winners circle at Gold Coast last Wednesday night thanks to a well rated front running drive on the Shane Sanderson trained Olgoldonblack. The margin was seven metres and change, and the rate a slick 1-57.3.
Jones works in the successful Sanderson stable on Thursdays and weekends but the rest of the time she is heavily involved in the home team of mum and dad, Jodie and Peter Jones where her special horses are Joscotay and Melton Bon Honey. Peter Jones has 35 years in trotting under his belt and Jodie's family were the backbone of the Rockhampton Harness racing Club in recent times.
LJ failed to emulate her father, who won at his driving debut, but her record from 33 drives so far is one win, five seconds and six thirds, which is a strike rate of one cheque per 2.75 drives and is an indicator of growing skill in the sulky.
The sky is the limit for Lauren Jones who described her first win as "fantastic", but tempered the excitement with a need to run studies in graphic design in tandem with any career she might have in trotting. Backed by a family who have seen what administrative decisions can do to individual race clubs, LJ intends to proceed down the harness road with an insurance policy in place. Very smart, level headed with a bright future.
