HISTORICAL PHOTOS RACETRACK PERFORMANCES RESEARCHED

By Phil Purser
08/03/2010
Photos John Purser/ Research Ray See
This is the Messmate- Hindu Star yearling being sold at the RNA Showgrounds in 1972. He grew up to be named Tramp.
Queensland Racing senior staffer Ray See took an interest in the “historical photos” that were displayed on this website a couple of weeks ago, that were advised as being taken by my older brother John when he was a student at Gatton College – which is situated between Ipswich and Toowoomba, on the Warrego Highway.

The photos were taken in 1972 and 1974 and included Lyndhurst Stud and Gainsborough Lodge stallions of the ilk of Smokey Eyes and Beau Brummel, etcetera, as well as four yearlings that were sold at Brisbane’s RNA Showgrounds.

To that end Ray wrote:

“I have done a bit of a search through the old hard cover Stud Books and Australian Turf Registers and found the following which may be of some interest.

I have checked their records from 2yo (1972/73) through to 6yo seasons.

As Wayne Flynn advised the Messmate-Hindu Star colt raced as Tramp. As a 2yo he raced 11 times winning three races, an Eagle Farm 2yo with Graham Ireland aboard on 4/11/72, the Golden Horseshoe at Eagle Farm again with Graham Ireland aboard on 11/11/72 and a Kilcoy Handicap on 30/6/73.

At three he raced 12 times winning an Esk Purse (Tony Erhart), a Gold Coast Seventh Division (ridden by a jockey with the surname Ross) and a Doomben Transition (Mel Schumacher).
He won twice as a 4yo from 19 starts, a Doomben Encourage (Graham Cook) and a Gold Coast Sixth Division (Mel Schumacher).

At five he won twice at Lismore and once at Casino from 26 starts and as a 6yo he won a Ballina Welter from 19 starts”.

This is the Village Square- Lady Star colt who grew up to be named Village Star.

The Village Square – Lady Star colt raced as Village Star, he won a Gold Coast Maiden from three runs as a 2yo, won a Lockyer Eighth Division (Mick Dittman) and a Toowoomba Approved Handicap (Graham Cook) from seven appearances. He had two unplaced starts as a 4yo and won a Clifton Purse from four runs at five. He did not race as a 6yo.

This is the Lads Love-Flash Lightning filly that raced as Lightning Miss.
The filly by Lads Love out of Flash Lightning raced as Lightning Miss. She won a Mackay Eleventh Division from seven runs as a 2yo and only started one more time as a 5yo where she was unplaced.

This James-Fair Harbour colt carried the same name as the northern Queensland city of Cooktown.
The James-Fair Harbour colt raced as Cooktown. He had two runs at two and won an Innisfail Maiden from eight outings at three. As a 4yo he won at Atherton and Mareeba from nine starts and won again at Atherton from four runs at five, before having two unplaced runs as a 6yo.

(Editors note) Many thanks to Ray See for his wonderful effort in researching the performances of the four yearlings - given that it is 35 years since they raced - and about the only thing it is hard to find in racing are accurate records.

Tony Erhart rode a city winner the other day in Brisbane at age 62. He was photographed by Dan Costello after unsaddling that horse - Huff And Puff. Tony rode Tramp to win at Esk about 35 years ago.

I photographed Mel Schumacher a couple of years ago when he was working for then Deagon based trainer Shaun Dwyer before that trainer moved to Melbourne. Mel won a Doomben Transition on Tramp - and I'm not pulling your leg.

I photographed long retired jockey Graham Cook a few years ago at a Queensland Racing awards night. Graham rode Tramp when he won a Doomben Encourage in the 1970's and he also rode Village Star when that galloper won at Toowoomba.

This is a file photo from a couple of years ago at Ipswich of Mick Dittman, who rode Village Star to win a Lockyer Eighth Division. I'm not sure whether "Lockyer" relates to Gatton or Laidley track, as both are in the Lockyer Valley, so I'll show you both tracks.

This is the Laidley racetrack which is no more. It is now a sports park in Laidley and I took this photo earlier this year. The original racetrack grandstand, which can be seen in the centre of the photo, has been retained by the Laidley Council.

I thought I had a photo of the Gatton racetrack, but I haven't, so here is the results board at the track that Justracing sponsors.
