BRISBANE RACING PREVIEW

By Phil Purser
26/02/2010
Kris Lees (pictured) is one of the few trainers in Australia who I believe could train a choko vine to run over the outhouse. Who are the others? If you subscribed to Sectional Times you'd know the answer. Kris Lees trains the website tip tomorrow in Brisbane. Even if it doesn't run a place I stick by my statement.
Racing returns to Eagle Farm tomorrow and an eight race card, featuring big fields is set down for decision.

It would be advisable to monitor the weather in south-east Queensland before betting, as squally showers are set to persist for the next week at least – and they are forecast to intensify throughout tomorrow, so do watch the rain if betting, as some of them that have been coming through this week are heavy.

The race I have chosen to preview for readers in Brisbane tomorrow is the main race on the program, which is Race 6. It is a Quality handicap over 1200 metres and is worth $100,000 in prizemoney. Run at Listed level, the winner pockets $64,000.

The race is interesting in that it may well be the catalyst to suggest there is something wrong with the class system of our racing in Queensland, as we obviously have far too few horses coming through the classes that can make Open company – and that will be the subject of a special story I’ve penned for Justracing next week.

My thoughts on Race 6 tomorrow at Eagle Farm are:

HORSE
COMMENT
THE JACKAL
Not a horse of mine. I wish they’d retire him to a nice paddock out “the back of beyond” somewhere soon. I’ve given up trying to catch him – and even though he won last start his best days are clearly behind him.
NUCLEAR MEDICINE
Had been off the scene for over six months when he resumed with a good second on 13 February at this track and distance. Drawn awkwardly here (8 out of 9). Additionally he has never won second up in four goes - and he’s second up here. Furthermore Thurlow replaces Colless which isn’t exactly a plus either, but any rain would help his cause as he’s also never won a race in nine goes to date on a “good” track.
BOLD REASON
Needed the run the other day when first up for 14 months and should need this run as well, to get rid of that flab inside him.
BITABIFF
Hasn’t won a race since Oxley sailed up the Brisbane River – 23/8/08 in a photo, to be exact. If you hadn’t scored for that long would you suddenly think you’d get lucky at 3.45pm Brisbane time tomorrow?
MOTSPUR
Talented Newcastle trained galloper with a good overall record. Went like a mule on a heavy track at Rosehill on 6/2/10. Has a great record on a “good” track (won 6 of 14), but has never won a race on a “dead” track in six goes, so the track condition of “good” may help, albeit he’s been placed in four of six on dead.
TEST EDITION
Dropping in distance from 1400 back to 1200 and is from a stable I don’t back. He’s overrated by most and he couldn’t even beat Mustard, who’s on walking frames, in last start. Won one of 11 on “good” and one of eight on “dead”, so he’s a wet tracker – that’s if he’s anything at all.
DRUMSHAMBO
An ordinary stayer resuming and I learnt many moons ago that only “classy stayers are a chance first up”.
PYRAMIDS
He wins 33.3% of the time and he runs a place 66.6% of the time, but for some reason he hasn’t run for eight months. I would say he is all dressed up to run a race first up though, as he was scratched last week from a far easier race than this – due to a wide alley. I don’t back this stable’s runners either, but will include this horse in all exotics, as if he was just in this for a conditioning run, he could have just gone for a conditioning run around the middle of the track last week, but they didn’t do that.
POOR JUDGE
Is in good form, but faces a huge class hike here. Additionally he hasn’t run for over a month, which I don’t like, as sound and fit horses can race within 21 days of their last run in Australia, so has he had a set-back?

CONCLUSION: Back Motspur each way - on a “good” or “dead” track.
