BRISBANE RACING PREVIEW |
By Phil Purser05/02/2010 |
Scott Seamer (pictured) rides website each way tip Captain Sonador tomorrow at Doomben. He's got the riding instructions, so if the trainer has done his job, we'll just about get the money. Doomben in Brisbane hosts an eight race card tomorrow.
Rain from a fading tropical cyclone has been around during this week and showers are forecast again tomorrow, so betting confidence at tomorrow’s meeting will be determined by the state of the track during the afternoon, but hopefully the rain will stay away.
Two Open company races are being run at the Doomben meeting, with Race 1 being over 2020 metres and Race 5 being over 1350 metres. Both races have a very long tail, with Race 1 only managing to attract eight acceptors after a couple of slugs decided to accept to race, but they’d be better suited racing way out west, at somewhere like Dingo. Similarly the 1350-metre Open company race features 11 acceptors, but at least five of the 11, possibly six, are like me, in that their best days are clearly behind them.
The biggest prizemoney race at Doomben is Race 6, a fillies and mares Quality Handicap and it has brought together a handy field who are competing under Quality Handicap conditions for $100,000 in total prizemoney – with $64,000 going to the winner.
The race I have chosen to preview is Race 8 on the card – the 3YO, over 1110 metres.
My thoughts on the race are:

HORSE

COMMENT
CAPTAIN SONADOR
He’s not a bad horse ridden quietly. The awkward draw means at least he’ll get ridden correctly. He’ll run on strongly late and should finish in the first five. Hasn’t won a race under 1200 metres is his problem.
PURR OF GLORY
Has won three of four career starts. She beat absolutely nothing when she ran out an easy winner upon resuming from a spell at this track on 26/1/10, albeit her overall time was okay. She’s on a very quick back-up here of only 11 days from her first up run to her second up run, and she drops back in distance, which is not ideal.
BEVAGNA
She’s not much good, albeit she’s consistent. She was trounced by Purr of Glory on both 12/8/09 and 29/8/09. She did resume from a spell at Caloundra on 24/1/10 with a very authoritative win, so if she’s going to have a good campaign - this might be it.

RACING PEGASUS
Hasn’t run for over a year, so I’d prefer to be a voyeur.
STREET STALL
Winning at the Toowoomba cushion track, but has failed in Brisbane before, so I’ll pass.
FALVELINA
Won well last start over the road at Eagle Farm and ran good overall time, after getting rolled at $1.55 at Caloundra the start before. The wide alley is a worry, given the speed inside.
SHOW A LION HEART
Has won, or been placed, in five of six starts, but isn’t much good, so I’ll pass.
POWERFUL LIGHT
Goes fast, if they want her ridden that way, but unfortunately she’s by Falvelon, so she stops quickly - like last start at the Gold Coast when she even got run down over 900 metres. Hasn’t won past 1025 metres.
RACING HEART
Will get a nice run here, off the alley, but not up to this class on disclosed form.
REDBOLT
Engaged Ipswich today, so won’t run here.
MAROON BELLS
Runs on in her races, but she’s coming out of a Class 1 company win, so prefer to watch.
DANCINGWITHANGELS
Resuming from a bleeding attack here and those horses are generally ready to run a race first up, as next time they bleed they are gone for life. Has only won one of 11 starts though, so not here.

Scratched.

AL CHICAGO

Scratched.

EXPLORE THE WORLD
Can’t win a Class 1 at Caloundra, so no.
HUCKLEBERRY DANE
A Maiden after 11 starts, yet he was the run of the race behind Purr of Glory last start, so does that query Purr of Glory’s form?
TEDIKA
Not likely.
CONCLUSION: The speed should be genuine. If the track is rated “good” or “dead” when the race is run, I’d back Captain Sonador each way. If Seamer goes back and rides him cold, with cover, he’ll nearly run over the top of them late.
